How to Prepare Your Car

Have a mechanic look over your car
1. Have a mechanic look over your car.

The best preventative step you can take before taking a long road trip is to bring it to a mechanic (cough, our service center) for a multi-point inspection and oil change. Our service technicians will check your vehicle’s fluid levels, battery and brakes before you hit the road.

Inspect your tires
2. Inspect your tires.

Ensure your tires are up to the task of added mileage by checking the tread. Not only does traction help make the ride literally smoother, but good tires will have the stopping power needed to avoid collisions or pedestrians in time. Use the penny method or ask our service technicians to check your tires for you.

3. Don't overload your vehicle.

Especially if you plan on going with a group of friends or family. Overloading your vehicle with people (and their belongings) creates a noticeable strain on your vehicle’s handling and gas mileage, and an overflowing cargo area could prevent you from seeing out of your rearview mirror.

How To Prepare Yourself

1. Charge your devices.

Bring your devices along with a full charge. Batteries will run down quicker while using data instead of wifi, and if you’re travelling through areas without service, your phone’s battery will wear out while searching for a signal. Don’t forget your car charger for longer trips!

2. Extra Supplies: Packed.

Besides your belongings and suitcases for the road trip, you’ll also need extra supplies in case of emergencies. This includes cases of water, a flashlight and batteries, extra jackets or blankets. Stock up your first aid kit and double check your jumper cables to ensure all is working well.

3. Caffeine: On Hand.

Coffee, tea, energy drinks, chocolate, etc. Bring some snacks or drinks along for the ride to prevent drowsiness or even boredom. It can be easy to zone out while driving — especially during long road trips — which can turn your vacation into something a little more dangerous. If you don’t like caffeine, listen to music or roll down the windows for some fresh air. And always get a good night’s rest before a long drive.

Inspect your tires
4. GPS: Connected.

Remember when we mentioned that some areas may not have service? This is where a GPS comes in handy! GPS doesn’t need internet to work, so if your device fails, a GPS is a great backup. Connect your GPS before starting off on your trip so a mid-drive scramble doesn’t occur.

5. Stay safe.

You know this — don’t text and drive, and always obey local and state speed limits. Your safety, and the safety of those around you, matters more. Travel smart!
