What's the difference between a crossover and an SUV?
If you think you need a vehicle a bit bigger than a sedan or hatchback, then chances are you've considered SUV (sport utility vehicle) and crossover models. They may be similar in body style, relatively sporty and have similarly sized engines. So what's the difference? You might have thought that the words were interchangeable or that crossover was just an adjective describing the SUV. And while many manufacturers have blurred the lines of the distinction between the two over the years, we're here to settle the discussion about the difference between a crossover and an SUV.
It's All About The Platform
Really the only major difference between the two that can be identified is their frame. If your vehicle is based on a truck's platform, it's an SUV, and if it's based on a car's platform, it's a crossover. This means that an SUV uses a body-on-frame construction while all crossovers are considered unibody vehicles.
Body-On-Frame vs. Unibody
Since the Model-T, the body-on-frame method of building cars has been utilized. This style of design saved a lot of money since manufacturers could put different body styles on the same frame. Today, hardly any vehicles aside from commercial vehicles, trucks and off-road vehicles are made this way. On the other hand, unitary body construction means that a vehicle's frame and body are made together and are part of the same structure. Although a bit more complicated to make, unibody vehicles tend to be safer, due to incorporated crumple zones.
Which Is Right For You?
If you prefer large vehicles or you know you'll need a vehicle capable of towing or off-roading, then an SUV might be a good fit for you. Otherwise, a crossover might be the better choice.
